Bechtler Museum of Modern Art
Located at 420 S Tryon St, Charlotte, NC 28202. on Uptown’s Levine Campus for the Arts, the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art is a 36,500 square-foot museum that exhibits mid-20th century modern art. The museum is designed by Swiss architect Mario Botta. It is located in a building that has a terra cotta exterior and a glass atrium that diffuses natural light throughout the building.
The Bechtler family owns the collection of works displayed in the museum, including works by Picasso, Alberto Giacometti, Andy Warhol, and Joan Miro. The Bechtlers also donated important works by other artists to the city of Charlotte. This includes modernist tapestries from Dali and Picasso. The Bechtlers also donated artworks by Paul Klee, Max Ernst, and Andy Warhol.
The Bechtler family’s collection is comprised of works that reflect the tastes of the Swiss family. It includes American, British, and European artists such as Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso, Alberto Giacometti, Ben Nicholson, Joan Miro, and Max Ernst. The Bechtlers are known for their support of artists such as Sol LeWitt, who was an American artist and founder of Minimalism. In 1969, the Bechtlers purchased an early sculpture by LeWitt.
In addition to its collection of contemporary and modern art, the museum also partners with community groups to engage audiences in the arts. The Bechtler Museum’s programs are designed to reach underserved audiences, with the goal of promoting active learning experiences.
